I am thrilled to announce that our amazing daughter, Fatima has graduated from high school, it feels like just yesterday, I was putting her back on a plane to Nashville. See I decided to come back home after a decade in the US, I had reach the glass ceiling in my career in my small town of Green Bay Wisconsin and working in Africa as an African trained in the US sounded so appealing, my children will learn about our culture and they will know our people.
In the mix it of it all, Fatima was struggling with the school systems, the ‘one size’ fits all approach to education was not working out well for her and my loud obnoxious personality did not match with her quiet reserved self.
Watching her struggle was too much for both of us. I thought sending her to my loving sister house was the best thing to do, she will have her girl cousins to learn and grow up with and she will do fine in school. My dream was that the American dream will appeal to her like it did to me and my siblings.
This week, she walked across the stage to receive her diploma. This moment is a whirlwind of emotions- pride, joy, excitement and a dash of nostalgia.
Fatima is a force to reckoned with, from helping in the house and bossing her brothers around, acing her classes while going from French back to English, participating in that extracurricular activities she liked so much. She’s shown incredible dedication and passion in everything she does and her hard work has paid off and we couldn’t be more proud of her acccomplishment.
Throughout her high school journey, Fatima has made us laugh, cheer and sometimes even cry, beyond her academic and extracurricular achievements, Fatima has been a wonderful friend, sister and daughter. Her kindness, empathy, and leadership have touched the lives of many around her. She’s the kind of person who lights up a room with her quiet presence and makes the world a better place just being in it.
As Fatima moves on the next chapter of her life, we know she’s ready to take on any challenge that comes her way. College is just around the corner, and we are excited to see her spread her wings and soar to new heights. We have no doubt that she will continue to excel and make us proud every step of the way.
Today, we celebrate not just Fatima’s graduation, but family, the sense of being there for each other. It was heart warming to see my parents, my sisters, aunts, cousin, nephews come together to share meals, memories and laughters. I will like to thank my sisters for helping me with my children, the term ‘it takes a village’ is well alive and thriving in our households, my parents did a fine job.
This milestone is a testament to her hard work, perseverance and spirit but also to all that cheered her across the high school.
Congratulations Fatima, the world is your oyster, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things you will achieve.
With all our love and pride,
Mommy, your brothers, aunts, uncles and grandparents.
